Well kids, I made it. I'm in Charlotte and pretty much moved in. Well...there's no furniture yet and my team hasn't arrived but my room is finished. (thanks to my friends mike and caleb!!) The house is nice, much larger than I expected. The neighborhood seems very busy. There are people out at most times of the day and cars continually driving up and down the roads. Right now I can hear kids talking and playing across the street.( shounldn't they be in bed?) Anywho...let me tell you a couple fun stories from my day:
As I was leaving this morning to get a new tire (had a a flat yesterday-no fun!) the two people who live next door to me come walking up and introduced themselves and asked if I could take them to get gas for their car. The guy had ran out of gas last night and walked almost six miles home! So I took them to get gas and to his car. I was so excited to get to meet them! They were really sweet people and were telling me a bit about the neighborhood. They invited me to a cookout they are having this weekend and told me to come over anytime I wanted.
I, being directionally challenged, got lost coming back from dropping them off at his car. I drove around for a long time and was able to see a bit more of Charlotte. It is such a pretty city. I finally ended up in a place that looked vaguely familiar and made my way to the tire place. Then I decided to head to Target. This Target is HUGE and has a four level parking garage...how crazy is that? I love Target and had a great time just wondering around for a while. It sounds kinda dumb, but it made me smile to walk around Target because it reminded me of Atlanta and my friends. ( we all LOVE Target!) I bought some random things for the house and some groceries for me and then headed back home. Guess what? I didn't get lost on the way home-I found my way all by myself and didn't even have to look at the directions!! I was so proud!
I got a bank account today for the team. The lady who helped me was so friendly and told me about an art/music festival that's happening this weekend. I waved at a couple of people that I saw sitting on the porch as I drove by and they just stared and didn't respond. It's been a while since I was that "white girl that moved in" or since I've gotten the "why are you living in this neighborhood?" In South Atlanta most people knew who all the white folk were and didn't really question it much. It's weird to be the new person again, to have to start all over forming relationships and gaining trust of neighbors.
I will be posting pictures soon of the house and team members and other fun Charlotte things. That picture of me is on my way here....can you tell I was excited?!?! :)
